When I think about the most important things my kids learn, it’s not math and reading that comes to mind. Most unschoolers (well most parents in general) say the same thing. We are raising our kids to be good human beings. For us this means being responsible, being open to new experiences and ideas, and helping others.
When it comes to volunteer opportunities for kids, it’s difficult to find places that allow the under 12 group to volunteer. One of few choices is a nursing home. Conveniently, I work at one. We have occasionally volunteered in the past but this year we committed to coming once a month. We had a fashion show, a parachute and folk song day, and a sock hop. This month we did a Christmas craft.

This craft turned out adorably (tiny kid hands mixed in with some HUGE man hands and everyone in between). The elders (as Asa calls them) like interacting with the kids so it doesn’t really matter what we do but this project was really fun.
