Freedom of self-expression

Today in micro-fashion:

For better or worse, our kids dress themselves. Esme has quite the eye for color and loves patterns. Nova is a full-time Disney princess. Asa routinely wears his shirts backwards or inside-out (or both). A couple of years ago, Cal insisted on wearing the same color shirt and jeans which meant I was constantly on the hunt for colored jeans at Goodwill.

I find it interesting that some parents feel the need to chose or police what their kids wear. Kids need structure, that’s true. Kids also need control over their environment. Control to wear what they want to wear, feel what they need to feel, and do what they want to do unless there is a good reason not to. The older the kids have gotten (and to be honest, the more mature I have gotten), I have come to understand this more.
