Even a dying man has to pack

The title of this post is a quote from Asa who had a sore throat this morning. We are all suffering from ear nose and throat symptoms as we adjust to the climate (so far, much drier than in Wisconsin). He felt much better this evening after having tea that he picked out at the grocery store.

Today we left Dijon for a very small town in the Jura department. First we had breakfast, Montessori time and lunch with our Dijon family.

We also played the board games we brought from home with the Montessori kids. We were able to play The Wizard Always Wins with a little reading help from me from start to finish twice. The Shopkins Spot It was also a big hit; we played it at least 15 times during our stay.

After lunch, we could not delay it anymore and we had to leave. Nova was very sad to go and as we were getting on the highway out of Dijon, she said “I miss them already!”. Hopefully we will meet up again soon.

After stopping for gas, groceries, and a snack we made our way to our new home where we are staying with unschoolers for the first time. We enjoyed the drive very much, especially the signs for falling rocks, the fences protecting the road from said rocks, and the signs saying mountain goat crossing next 4km. Another quote from today was when we saw cows on the side of a steep cliff and we said “watch for falling cows”.

A snack the girls picked out at the grocery store.

Sonya and Vincent welcomed us and they showed us their space. They have two kids, a boy Asa’s age and a girl a little younger than Nova.

Nova having goûter, or 4pm snack for kids (and adults if they want). Today it was brioche bread with Nutella and a choice of drinks like tea and juice.

They made us crêpes for dinner on an electric crêpe maker.

I’ve never had savory crêpes before and they were delicious! Sonya made a béchamel sauce to have on them and I loved that too. After dinner I begged for a walk around the neighborhood. I could hear the cow bells ringing and I wanted to see the cows. We saw the cows (dairy cows special to this region and for making Comte cheese).

And we visited the neighborhood playground.

I watched the boys play a board game together. Sonya and Vincent love strategy board games. Rain is expected the next two days so maybe there will be time for some board game playing for adults before we go.
