The one where I hitchhiked. Twice.

Today the rental car was due back at 9am. I left the kids at the apartment and returned it without incident. My plan was to take the bus back to the apartment. I looked online and it said the bus in Ajaccio cost 1€. To be safe I brought 4€ with me. Turns out the bus from the airport is 10€. I asked the bus driver if he would cut me a break but he wouldn’t so I started to walk to a regular bus stop which was 38 min away by foot.Along the way, I stuck out my thumb as I’ve seen so many other people do. A very nice gentleman stopped and gave me a ride to the closest bus stop. The only problem was the bus drove past without stopping. I realized there was no route information at that stop. It must have been shut down so it was back to hitchhiking. I saw a taxi and waved him down but he wouldn’t take me without the cash up-front. I put my thumb out again and another nice guy in a work van stopped for me. He took me towards downtown and left me where I could try again with the bus. This time I succeeded in catching the bus and got back to the apartment at the same time I would have by taking the original bus. I know my mom is reading this and shaking her head but I know she used to hitchhike when she was young. We see a lot of people doing it here (in France) and I asked one of our hosts about it. She said people look at it as ride-sharing. It’s economical and it’s good for the planet.
So after that adventure, I arrived back at the apartment just in time to meet our host who brought her new 9 passenger van to pick us up and take us to the beach. They just bought it yesterday and plan to turn it into a camping-car with six seats, a kitchen and sleeping space for six.

We went to the same beach as Monday but to the rocky part.

Below you can see the rocks/rock pools (and Cal and Asa If you look closely). Esme and I climbed them too.

Salt dried on the rocks from sea water that splashed up there with the waves.

It was around this time that I fell off a slippery rock into the rock pool. Luckily this rock pool was about 4 feet deep. Also luckily, I didn’t have my phone in my hand. I scraped my elbow a bit but didn’t it didn’t draw blood.

We spent a lot of time on the pebble beach and even found a bunch of sea glass.

Dried ball of algae.

Asa eating radishes.

The kids played with the host kids, rolling down the hill and Cal and their oldest little one had a mini sword fight with small sticks.

I think Corsica is my favorite place so far but I might be biased because of my love for beaches and the sun!

We went back to the apartment to clean it so it’s ready for Jean-François’ mom and to pack our things. Then Emilie came and gave us a ride to the ferry which was very nice of her. We purged 90% of our food so it was much easier going. We are going to take public transportation or walk to get our car tomorrow since we are able to manage our things much better.

We are on the ferry now and I’m rushing to publish this before we get too far from shore for 4G. We ate dinner on the boat tonight which was delicious and now we are going to explore the ship some more before finding a dessert before bed.

  1. Jessica, I wanted to let you know that I look forward to your post everyday. But I guess I am like your mom, hitchhiking makes me very nervous! Glad you guys are having a good time!
