Bahia Honda and the Turtle Hospital

We drove to Bahia Honda State Park today which was about an hour away.  I finally got to see my ocean beach.  I knew that the Keys are not known for beautiful beaches and Bahia Honda lived up to that.  The beach was very narrow but maybe it was high tide?? We did enjoy some mild waves and there was a large shallow area with a sandy bottom to splash around in so that was nice.

Nole and Asa did some snorkeling.

We had to leave sooner than I wanted because we had a reservation for a tour of the Turtle Hospital.

The Turtle Hospital received 40 baby turtles with cold shock from Cape Cod of the hundreds that were rescued there. They said some turtles get stuck in the Cape every year but this year there were more than usual.

There were other adorable babies including a leatherback sea turtle which is very rare in captivity. They said it will be probably be the only time any of us will see one in our lifetime.

Tiny loggerhead hatchling. It was about 3 inches long.

The picture above is the leatherback sea turtle. It was about 10 inches long. They can grow to weigh 2000 lbs and be 9 feet long. In the picture below they are doing wond care for one of the rescued babies from Cape Cod.

The tour guide was really knowledgeable and gave us tons of info on turtle care. They have some with lung problems who get nebulizers. When they’re gassy, they take Beano and they use lactulose for constipation.

After the tour, I wanted to go back to Bahia Honda Beach but no one else wanted to. We compromised and went back to the condo where there is a lagoon to swim in.

We made dinner at the condo tonight. Tomorrow we will go to Key West for the whole day. I have plans to get up for the sunrise which shouldn’t be too hard since it is at 7:25am.
