I have no idea what that is and I’m not touching it.

The title is a quote from our captain when Asa caught a mystery fish. We did find out what it was. Read on.

It’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of fishing. Sitting out in the hot sun (or worse, rain) soaking my bait in the lake for fish to nibble at and steal. When I do catch anything, it’s always a bluegill. But alas, others enjoy it so I do play along sometimes. I knew Nole would really love to do a fishing charter so I booked us a family one in Hilton Head. It was an early one at 8am and we also were traveling to another town today so we had to get up pretty early and pack up.

We met our captain, Westley, and got on board his vessel.

He was a younger guy and had a really calm disposition. He was the perfect captain for us. He was pretty knowledgeable about the wildlife and on our way to the first fishing spot showed us some white herons and roseate spoonbills. He said we would most likely see some dolphins. Nova spotted the first one. Then he noticed one in the distance and when we stopped, the dolphin came over for a closer look at us.

The fishing we did was all straight down right off the boat. You would just drop you line and sink it straight to the bottom and just leave it. He baited our hooks with shrimp, squid and mullet. I caught a small stingray right away. Then Nole caught a bonnet shark. We caught a bunch of other sharks. Everyone caught something, most of us caught like 5-6 somethings.

Asa caught this fish that stumped our captain. Asa called it a dragon fish because it has wings and what looked like claws. Turns out it was a sea robin. Westley handled it with caution (and a towel) in case it was a lion fish or something else dangerous.
Close-up of the sea robin, also called a gurnard.
Cal had a lot of luck and helped Nova catch this black tipped shark.
Nova’s shark she named Leo.
Cal helped Esme catch her own black tipped shark which was a pretty big one.
Esme’s shark she named Finny.
Asa caught this big stingray and named him Charlie.

Esme got a little nauseated and for a while she was asking to return to shore. I tried a bunch of things to help her (drinking cool water, cool water on the forehead, eating crackers, watching the horizon, moving to different parts of the boat) but what seemed to do the trick was acupressure on her wrist. She recovered and caught a shark or two after that.

I had a lot of fun fishing today. I would definitely do this again and my opinion of fishing has totally changed. I still don’t think I will do much lake fishing in the future though. They also have shrimping charters which sounds really fun.
