Viva Las Vegas

Our BLM site last night was wonderfully peaceful. It was super cold–it got down to 22 degrees. We had trouble with our heat during the night and realized it was because our battery was low. Normally you aren’t supposed to run a generator at night because of the noise but since we were the only ones around, we felt ok to run it. Plus it was really cold with no heat! After that it was warm until morning. We headed to Tobias’ place and Jessica, his wife and co-owner of the business, gave us a ride to drop our bags at the airport. Only problem was Southwest won’t allow you to check bags until 4 hours before your flight. Jessica offered to keep our bags for us which worked out even better because we could leave most of our backpacks as well. She dropped us at Area-15 and we made a plan to meet later.

First we checked out the outdoor art exhibits.

Area-15 is a entertainment center operated by a brand called Meow Wolf. We were there to do one of the experiences called Omega-Mart. It is an immersive art experience with hidden passages, themes and puzzles throughout. It is sort of like a modern art museum, mixed with a science museum, mixed with a place like Magiquest.

I didn’t realize how big the place was. There are tons of rooms and areas to explore.

Part looks like a store and then you take secret passages back to another world altogether.

Esme’s favorite part was talking on the phones. It was a novel experience for her!

There was also a good bit of ironic humor mixed in.

We were debating how much more time to spend and Asa almost fainted. Probably not drinking enough and running around for like 2 hours! He felt better once we got outside and then we hopped in a cab to take us to the north end of the strip and ate at an In-N-Out which was a must-do for Cal this trip.

Then we saw:

A giant flamingo,
A fake Mickey,
A dancing grandma,
A giant candy store,
The Eiffel Tower,
The Paris hotel,
The Bellagio fountain show,
Another kind of fountain,
The Brooklyn Bridge,
A Hershey guy,
A giant kiss,
The Statue of Liberty,
The Luxor,

Pyramids and the Sphinx.

We had made our way to the end of the Strip. We went a bit further and played some games at the Pinball Hall of Fame.

Across from the pinball place was the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. We had 15 minutes before our arranged pick up time, at the sign, with Jessica (RV owner Jessica) but as we approached the sign we saw a crazy long line of people. So we grabbed a pic with this sign outside the Harley dealership first, just in case we couldn’t get one with THE Las Vegas sign.

Turns out that crazy line was to get a picture right up in front of the sign but we aren’t that particular so we grabbed one from the side with almost no wait.

Jessica arrived with the RV but the parking lot was too full so we hopped across the street and met her at the Harley dealer. Then off to the airport, a short 10 minute drive away! Only there was a bad accident on the road to it and we were stuck stand-still traffic for a half hour. We found out there was a car accident that was causing the problem and went around but the whole thing turned a 10 minute drive into a 1 hour drive! But we made it to the airport in time and with a little hustle even managed to grab dinner. Our flight was delayed for about 15 minutes so we even got a little time to “recombobulate” at the gate and charge up our phones.
