We were sad to leave our favorite campground so far. I woke everyone up at 7am and we left the site at 8:05 and left the campground by 8:30 after dumping the sewer tanks and letting the kids download one.more.thing.
When I woke everyone up, I asked them if they wanted to… A: stick with our original plan and drive 6+ hours today and 4+ hours tomorrow with a stop to rest and sleep tonight or B: make a new plan to drive straight to Prince Edward Island (PEI) today which will take 9+ hours. They voted on straight there because it was already a long day of driving anyway, what’s a little more and also it would give us an extra night in PEI. So that’s what we did.
We made our first pitstop for gas and lunch about 3.5 hours in. I’m not a great record keeper but I found that when towing the trailer we can drive for about 3.5 hours before needing to stop for gas with a quarter of a tank left. So in my estimation we would need to stop once more before getting to PEI.

What I didn’t count on was the mountains. We got really terrible gas mileage in the Appalachians. Our second stop was 2 hours later with a quarter of a tank left in Hartland, NB home of the world’s largest covered bridge.

That’s not it.
That’s the world’s shortest covered bridge which was all we had time for. The real thing is not RV friendly so we got back on the road.
About 1.5 hours later I noticed I was down to a quarter of a tank again. I searched for the next gas station and it was 30 miles away. I slowed down (from 70mph down to like 50mph) to conserve gas. My gas warning light came on 15 minutes later. Only Asa (my copilot) and I knew the seriousness of the situation. Luckily we made it to the gas station without running out of gas. When you’re only getting 9-11 miles per gallon you can almost watch the gas gauge fall. We will need to make sure that doesn’t happen in the future.
Speaking of my copilot, Asa kept me entertained by asking for help with a crossword puzzle book. We all listened to an Anne of Green Gables audiobook (more on that tomorrow) too. I never felt tired of driving all day. That’s good news because we have some other long drives ahead of us.
We arrived at Cavendish Campground in Prince Edward Island National Park. It was 8:30pm and the mosquitos were numerous and fierce. We got the camper set up in record time and managed to only let one mosquito inside. I made hot dogs for dinner and then told the kids I was going on a short walk before full dark. I figured they wouldn’t want to come but some did and we walked to the beach which is a block away.
You have to scramble down the clay cliffs to get to the beach.

Sunset was at 9:11 tonight. We are 2 hours ahead of Milwaukee time here. Sunrise tomorrow is at 5:22 and I want to try and catch it but I don’t want to set an alarm. We will just see if I wake up for it.
The kids are kind of energized after being in the car all day so they are having a movie night and talking while I write this in bed. I’m off to sleep now and super excited to explore the island more tomorrow.
