Meine Lieder – Meine Träume

The title of The Sound of Music in Germany.  It means “My Songs, My Dreams”.  Neither Gundi or Stefan seemed to have heard of the movie – apparently, it is “rather unknown” in German speaking countries.  See an excerpt from the German Wikipedia page (translated into English) below.

Stefan and Gundi took us to the train station this morning after breakfast.  We will miss them as we continue our journey.  We hope to see them again, maybe in America next time if they can come visit us.  They were wonderful hosts and made us feel so welcomed and we would love to repay their kindness.

The girls and I went to the convenience store in the station at the train station to get some road snacks.  We noticed this bubble gum flavored “thirst quencher”.  We also thought Big Corny was a funny name for a candy bar.

On our first leg from Passau, Germany to Wels, Austria was only a half hour or so.  There were not any seats together so we sat on the floor in the bike cargo hold.

Our next leg was about an hour long and we got seats on that one.  We brought out our road snacks.  Esme got this watermelon thirst quencher which she didn’t like but it tasted just like watermelon gum (which she loves).  The girls try a lot of things over here that they don’t like so my mom and I end up getting lots of rejects to eat and drink.  I drank the rest of this one and enjoyed it.

We got to our apartment in Salzburg which has 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room/kitchenette.  We settled in and watched the Do-Re-Mi scene from Sound of Music to see what spots we wanted to take pictures of on the walk we were going to take to Mirabell Gardens.

The view out the bedroom window is pretty amazing. We are in the center of Salzburg and the building we are in used to be the home of Mozart’s sister (supposedly).

It was warm on our walk but overcast and misty.

We passed a love lock pedestrian bridge.

Then we got to Mirabell Gardens.  We saw some locations from the filming of Sound of Music but it was pretty crowded so we will come back early in the morning another day.  I’ll do a whole post on recreating some scenes from the movie later on.

Nova found this statue in the statue garden just when I was about to give up.  It is from the Do-Re-Mi scene we had just watched back at the apartment.

We made our way from there to a restaurant for early dinner since we didn’t have lunch.  We stopped at a resale shop and I found some lederhosen-esque sweatpants for myself and Nova and Esme found a few vintage pieces to add to their wardrobes.

After looking at a couple of menus, we decided on this casual Italian place.

After dinner, we went for groceries.  We got stuff for breakfast and one dinner for now.  We plan to have dinner at the apartment tomorrow.  Here you can see Nova’s outfit she picked out at the resale shop.

Esme got this Power Puff Girls sweatshirt at the resale shop.  We all went for a walk around the neighborhood after we put the groceries away.

We didn’t know it when we took these pictures but this spot was also in the movie.  My mom noticed while watching tonight and said “Hey, we saw that today too!”.  See the picture and description further down after our pics.

We decided to try frozen yogurt tonight instead of gelato.  The girls were not too impressed but I liked it.  The frozen yogurt was the more sour “original” flavor that the girls are not used to.   In America fro-yo tastes pretty much like ice cream and is not sour.

We went back to the apartment and now we are watching the Sound of Music before going to bed.
