Experiencing the world, one small corner at a time
Mozart Balls
There is a confection that is sold in Salzburg called Mozartkugel which translates to “Mozart bullet” but I swear someone told me they’re called Mozart Balls so that’s what I have been calling them. We bought some and I’m the only one who will eat them. This just in… Wikipedia confirms it, they are called Mozart Balls!
Yesterday, only Nova wanted to wear the curtain clothes and today only Esme did. We compromised that they would both wear their new dirndls this morning while we toured some sites from the film and stop home to change around lunch time.
First we went to Residenzplatz to see the horse fountain from the movie. If you want to see the pictures we took of the places used in “I Have Confidence”, click here.
We took some photos from the “Salzburg Montage” from the film too but you’ll have to wait until I have that post ready.
We did some window shopping too. Stores weren’t open yet (this was about 9:30 am and most things open around 10 or 10:30 here) and there were not many tourists out yet. It was nice to have the city to ourselves. Yesterday afternoon, the sidewalks got very crowded when we were walking around.
This was a Steiff store that sells very expensive plush animals.
We walked up to Nonnberg Abbey. We had to climb about 115 stone steps to get up here. This is where Maria (in real life) was a novice, training to be a nun. Maria and the Captain were married here in real life. In the movie, they just used the entrance gate for several scenes.
We walked back down to Kapitelschwemme, another historic square, where a market was being set up. It was about 10 am and it was not quite open though.
We ran into this bakery claiming to be the oldest in Salzburg (interestingly, near our apartment is another “oldest bakery in Salzburg”). This one uses a water-wheel mill to grind the flour and bakes over coals. We bought a braided loaf of bread that (surprise!) had raisins in it. My mom and I liked it but the girls couldn’t be convinced to try it.
Next we walked through St Peter’s Catacombs. This is an old cemetery that inspired the cemetery where the family hides in the movie. The filmmakers created that cemetery on a soundstage in Hollywood.
The girls were getting hungry so we grabbed a pretzel and then made our way back to the apartment for lunch. The girls each spent about 4€ on candy today and they ate these eyeball candies that are wet gummies with a sour liquid inside. Sounded kind of gross to me but they enjoyed them.
Nova has Mrs. Grass soup for lunch that she brought from home. She brought 6 boxes and has 3 left after today.
My mom and I went thrift shopping after lunch. We also bought some figs, which my mom had never tried before.
We went to three resale shops and I found another dirndl for myself and Nova at the third stop. My dirndl was 13€ and Nova’s was 9€. She wore hers when we went to our main attraction today, seeing the Sound of Music at the Salzburg Marionette Theater. Photos during the show are not allowed so I will post some I stole from the internet.
I made chicken and pasta for the girls and my mom and I decided we would go out for dinner. I’m getting sick of kids’ food and wanted something different tonight. I wore my lederhosen sweats, the girls came along for the company, and we ate bugogi and “crispy chicken” over pan noodles. The girls wanted ice cream so we got some of that on the way home. Esme led us home – she has a great sense of direction and already knows her way around the neighborhood.
