This morning we left the apartment at about 8:30 am in curtain clothes to go take pictures at Mirabell Gardens for the Do-Re-Mi sequence. Here are some other pictures we took at the park and on our walk back to the apartment to change.

I drank some Almdudler which is an herbal soda made in Austria. They use it to make Radtlers here. A Radtler is a mix of beer and lemonade that is popular in Germany.

After a wardrobe change, we set out to do a bunch of things that are free with our Salzburg Card.

This is one of the entrances to the Felsenreitschule, the amphitheater where the Trapp Family performed both in real life and in the movie. We didn’t want to take the hour-long tour in order to see the inside but there’s a pic from the internet to show how it looks.

(See the fortress in the pic below? That’s where we were heading!)

We took the funicular up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg which houses several museums.

The Marionette Museum where we saw some puppets from the Sound of Music production and a miniature reproduction of the trick fountains.

There was trumpet music at 11:45 and then the noon church bells all started ringing. It was pretty cool. It started raining and the girls didn’t bring the rain jackets I suggested. Nova decided to wear a reusable shopping bag on her head.

From there we went to the Toy Museum which was a fun hands-on museum for kids.

I was starving for lunch so we went back to the apartment to eat. We were going to squeeze in another museum today but we were museumed-out so we rested for a while before going to the riverfront for a boat ride and a craft bazaar.

It was raining pretty steadily so we decided to call it a day and head back to the apartment pretty quickly after the boat ride.
I thought we could wait out the rain then go for dinner but a quick check of the weather radar ruled that out. This storm has been really slow moving. I’ve realized on the last few trips I’ve taken how predictable Wisconsin weather is. We just look west and that’s coming to us at a predictable pace. Where there are mountains, weather can pop up without a lot of warning, move slowly etc. I suppose it would become more predictable to me if I lived here.
My mom and I ran to get takeout in the pouring rain. We grabbed a pizza for the girls and went back for Japanese for the two of us. The gentleman at the pizza place remembered us from the other night. He is a super sweet Austrian native and owner of the restaurant. He had photos on his walls presumably showing him getting his start in the restaurant business. The one in the top left on the second frame had me singing “Love Boat” on the way back to the apartment.

We noticed a leak in the roof of our apartment. Luckily, nothing an empty garbage can couldn’t fix for now. Rain is predicted again tomorrow. We had some options for tomorrow: go to Lake Mondsee for swimming or possibly an amusement park that’s about 1.5 hrs away by bus. We decided to scrap all that and stay closer to the apartment for our last full day in Salzburg.
